Uber is expanding its use of self-driving vehicles by announcing that it will soon deploy sidewalk robots in Miami. Cartken, an Oakland-based AI firm, will supply the six-wheeled delivery robots. Cartken’s robots are electric, with a boot that can hold about two dozen pounds of goods and a number of integrated cameras that can be used to detect impediments and direct the robot to its destination.
Magna, an auto supplier, manufactures Cartken’s robots. Uber is becoming more comfortable with the use of self-driving vehicles for ride-hailing trips and deliveries. In Las Vegas, Uber is also advertising Motional’s robotaxis for ride-hailing clients on its app.
