US consumers used app-based price comparison tools to save money amid inflation

In the first ten months of 2022, over 37 million US buyers used apps like Upside, Fetch, and Price.com to save money amid inflation. Fetch rewards users with points that are paid for by its retail and brand partners and can be redeemed for items such as gift cards. Fetch had 14.4 million app installations as of mid-November 2022, up 36% from the previous year.

Upside is a cash-back app that began with gas stations and has now expanded to include grocery stores and fast-food restaurants. According to co-founder Alex Kinnier, shoppers spend around $6 billion every year using the app. Price.com tracks the prices of over a billion goods from 15,000 websites and shops. According to CEO RJ Jain, it can find buyers a better price than Amazon in 25% of Amazon queries. Its iOS app contains an Amazon plug-in that displays offers from other retailers while customers buy on Amazon.
