At the grocery store, digital wallet acceptance is increasing, and retailers that do not yet accept mobile payments may need to move up if they want to stay competitive. According to data from PYMNTS’ new study “Connected Wellness: The Next Prescription for Healthcare Providers—Digital Wallets,” which is based on a September survey of a census-balanced panel of more than 2,600 U.S. consumers, 24% had used digital wallets to pay for their most recent grocery purchase. Debbie Guerra, chief product officer at ACI Worldwide, told PYMNTS last year that the epidemic had significantly increased digital payment usage. Adoption has clearly progressed. Previous PYMNTS research from the January study “Digital Economy Payments: How U.S. Shoppers Paid During the Holiday Season,” which surveyed a census-balanced panel of more than 3,300 United States adults in December about their purchases over the previous month, discovered that 2.3% had used PayPal for their most recent grocery purchase at the time. Another 1.4% used Apple Pay, while 1% used a different digital wallet.
