Chipotle is making efforts to expand its composting initiatives across its more than 3,200 restaurants, with waste reduction being a key factor in determining executive compensation bonuses. In 2022, the restaurant chain diverted nearly half of its waste from landfills, composting or recycling over 196,000 tonnes of waste. Chipotle plans to implement composting programmes in approximately 23% more locations this year, targeting around 234 additional restaurants. While waste reduction remains crucial for the company, challenges such as product composition, limited composting facilities, and customer behaviour need to be addressed. Chipotle is working on innovative solutions, such as sourcing compostable alternatives for items like cups and forks. Additionally, the company acknowledges the importance of educating customers about proper waste sorting to maximise composting efforts and create a positive impact on waste reduction.
