A new initiative called Recycle Check is utilising QR codes to provide hyperlocal recycling instructions for consumers. By scanning a product’s QR code and inputting their ZIP code, individuals can determine if the item is suitable for their local recycling program. Currently, 60% of consumers face confusion regarding recycling, impacting compliance rates. The overall U.S. recycling rate is approximately 32%, but for plastics, it’s below 6%. Recycle Check, launched by The Recycling Partnership, is partnering with brands like General Mills and Horizon Organics to incorporate local recycling information into packaging via QR codes. This dynamic information system will continuously be updated based on evolving recycling facility capabilities. As plastic recyclability remains a critical issue, initiatives like Recycle Check aim to enhance transparency and educate consumers about sustainable recycling practices.
