The fragmented recycling system in the U.S. creates challenges in communicating recyclability information to consumers. To address this, the Recycling Partnership has developed Recycle Check, a platform that provides up-to-date recycling information based on a consumer’s location. By scanning a QR code or entering their zip code, consumers can quickly determine whether an item is accepted for recycling in their area. Consumer confusion regarding recycling leads to significant amounts of recyclable material ending up in landfills. Recycle Check aims to address this issue by providing reliable and accessible information, building trust, and empowering consumers to make informed recycling decisions. The platform complements existing labelling systems, such as How2Recycle, and is being piloted by brands like General Mills and Horizon Organic. The goal is to establish a national solution that adapts to evolving regulations and improves recycling rates.
