Ben & Jerry’s has collaborated with Tony’s Chocolonely to end modern slavery and child labour across supply chains in the chocolate industry. The ice cream brand is adopting Tony’s Open Chain sourcing principles. These are designed to bring improvement in working conditions for farmers through paying more for cocoa beans and the transition to fully traceable cocoa beans. Ben & Jerry’s already provides a Fair Trade Premium to its suppliers. The cocoa trade is famous for supporting slavery and child labour. Big names like Nestlé, Cargill, Barry Callebaut, Mars, Olam, Hershey, and Mondelēz have been accused of supporting these practices, but Ben & Jerry’s is combating this. Adopting Tony’s Open Chain would enable it to trace its farmers and social and environmental circumstances of production.
