Fifteen key players from the UK’s £73 billion chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector have signed an agreement to launch Flue2Chem, a program aimed at transforming the sustainability of the UK’s consumer products industry and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.The Society of Chemical Industry, Unilever, and 13 other organizations have secured funding for a two-year program to develop a new value chain that converts industrial waste gases into sustainable materials for consumer goods. The £5.4 million project, which has received £2.68 million from Innovate UK through UK Research & Innovation’s Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge, is intended to help the UK reach its net-zero target by 2050. This is a necessary step as the majority of carbon used in the production of products such as plastics, cosmetics, and synthetic textiles is still extracted from fossil fuels.
