Nespresso pilots home-compostable coffee capsules in France and Switzerland

From spring 2023, Nespresso will test home-compostable coffee capsules on the Nespresso Original system in France and Switzerland. After three years of research and development, paper-based capsules are being hailed as a breakthrough in packaging technology. According to a 2020 French Environment and Energy Management Agency Consumer Study, demand for compostable packaging is rising, with an estimated 45% of French citizens already composting one or more forms of biowaste at home.

The new coffee capsules, created in collaboration with packaging pioneer Huhtamaki, are also recyclable and made from 80% recycled aluminium. These capsules are acceptable in public biowaste containers in France. Another Nestlé brand, Nescafé, launched a “coffee shop at home” idea earlier this month.
